Dems Back McCain

Clinton fundraiser backs McCain over Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A top Hillary Rodham Clinton fundraiser threw her support behind Republican John McCain on Wednesday, saying he will lead the country in a centrist fashion and accusing the Democrats of becoming too extreme.

"I believe that Barack Obama, with MoveOn.org and Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean, has taken the Democratic Party - and they will continue to - too far to the left," Lynn Forester de Rothschild said. "I'm not comfortable there."

Rothschild is also a member of the Democratic National Committee's Platform Committee. She said she would be stepping down from her position on the committee but will not switch political parties.

Clinton spokeswoman Kathleen Strand said in an e-mail that the New York senator disagrees with Rothschild's decision to endorse McCain.

"Senator Clinton has been criss-crossing the country and doing whatever she can to make the very clear case that the Obama-Biden ticket represents the new ideas and positive change we need right now, and the McCain-Palin ticket does not," Strand said in the e-mail.

Rothschild said she was excited by the prospect of a woman being in the White House, even though she and Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin disagree on issues. The Alaska governor opposes abortion except in the case of a threat to the mother's life. Rothschild said she supports abortion rights.

"I believe that the McCain-Palin government will be a centrist government," Rothschild said. "It's not going to be an ideological government."

Rothschild is a member of the DNC's Democrats Abroad chapter and splits her time living in London and New York. She was one of Clinton's top fundraisers, bringing in more than $100,000 for her presidential campaign. She built a multimillion-dollar telecommunications company before marrying international banker Sir Evelyn de Rothschild.

Rothschild said she has not discussed her support for McCain with Clinton.

"I'm sure she is not pleased with what I'm doing today," she said. "But you know what? I have to do what I believe in."

Hmmm looks like a smart Republican. Rep Congressman backs Obama.

(CNN) "? Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, the Maryland Republican who lost a heated primary challenge earlier this year, said Friday he's endorsing Democrat Barack Obama's White House bid.

Gilchrest, who has served in the House for close to two decades, told a Maryland radio station Obama and his running mate Sen. Joe Biden have the experience needed for the job.

"My perspective is that the ticket is Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden that they have the breadth of experience, I think they are prudent, they are knowledgeable," he told WYPR. "We just can't use four more years of the same kind of policy that's somewhat hazardous, which leads to recklessness."

The move doesn't come as a big surprise: Gilchrest is a strong opponent of the Iraq war and has voted for a timeline for withdrawal. He's also endorsed the Democrat running to succeed him.

Another letter from the Times News:

Democratic Party took wrong turn

Like the former Republican, I too switched parties. The day Franklin Delano Roosevelt died, I cried; the day someone killed John Fitzgerald Kennedy, I was greatly distressed "? and still am. The Democratic Party of the 1940s, 1950s and the year JFK "left office'' in the '60s in no way resembles the Democratic Party that Lyndon Baines Johnson, James Earl Carter Jr. and William Jefferson Clinton threw together "? now a party based on deceit, incompetence, and corruption.
The party which once used our leaders' middle names, and was proud to do so, left me.
For every one country-club type, lukewarm Republican or moderate that proudly switches to Barack Hussein Obama, there must be several decent, fair minded, non-Republicans who are thoroughly disgusted with the candidate (all hope, no substance), the Chicago-type politician that threw a fellow Democrat and 18 million votes under the bus and now leads his party and a kiss-along media in an intense, dedicated effort to the personal and total destruction of the government of Alaska.
I am blessed by God to be in the 100 percent of Americans who in seven years have not been attacked and murdered by terrorists in my country. I don't think this remarkable record was achieved by sitting down without any conditions and talking to the potential killers.

Which is why I can no longer vote for a democrat. Carter sealed the deal that no thinking person could ever vote for a democrat.

Senator John McCain's campaign manager was paid more than $30,000 a month for five years as president of an advocacy group set up by the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to defend them against stricter regulations, current and former officials say.

Mr. McCain, the Republican candidate for president, has recently begun campaigning as a critic of the two companies and the lobbying army that helped them evade greater regulation as they began buying riskier mortgages with implicit federal backing. He and his Democratic rival, Senator Barack Obama, have donors and advisers who are tied to the companies.

But last week the McCain campaign stepped up a running battle of guilt by association when it began broadcasting commercials trying to link Mr. Obama directly to the government bailout of the mortgage giants this month by charging that he takes advice from Fannie Mae's former chief executive, Franklin Raines, an assertion both Mr. Raines and the Obama campaign dispute.
